Ago Uchi - strike to the chin

Anza - Relaxed sitting position withtthe knees bent and ankles crossed in front.

Ashi- foot 

Bu Do - the warrior way of life

Chudan- middle of body, ( targets: solar plexus, ribs, liver, kidneys)

Chudan Soto Uke - middle block from outside to inside

Chudan Uchi Uke - middle block from inside to outside

Chusoku - ball of foot

Dachi/tachi - stance

Dogi (gi) - karate uniform

Enpi - elbow 

Fumi Ashi - foot work, step forward or back

Furi Uchi - Hook punch

Gedan - lower body (targets: groin, inner and outer leg, knees, ankles, feet)

Gedan Barai - low parry 

Geri - kick

Geri age - rising kick

Gyaku tsuki  - reverse thrust or punch

Hajime - begin

Han - half

Han mi - ribcage and pelvis  on a 45 degree angle 

Han kiba dachi - Half horse-back stance 

Haisoku - top of foot

Hidari - left

Hiji - elbow

Hikite - pull back or chamber the hand 

Hikiashi - pull back or chamber the foot

Hiza- knee

Hiza geri - knee kick

Ibuki - breathing technique which draws air in through the nose and out through the mouth in a "forced exhale ". 

Jissen - Full contact

Jissen kumite  - full contact fight 

Jodan - Upper body (target: jaw, temple, nose, neck)

Kamae - body posture with ki

Kakato - heel

Kakato geri - heel kick

Kake - hook

Kake ashi dachi - hook stance

Ki - life force

Kiai - the power of the united mind, body and spirit often culminating in a shout

Kiai Irete - execute technique with  purpose 

Kiba Dachi - horse-back stance

Kihon- Basic technique

Kime - Finish technique with quick. strong and direct movement.

Kime Waza - finishing technique

Kohai - junior student

Kosar - foot work, switch feet in place

Kumite no Kamae - active fighting posture

Kumite no Tachi - fighting stance

Mae - front

Mae geri - front snap kick

Mae keage - front rising kick

Mawashi - circular

Mawashi geri - roundhouse kick

Mawashi uchi - roundhouse strike

Mawate - turn

Me sen - fixing your eyes directly and stongly toward your objective

Migi - right

Mi Kiri - If a fighter is attacked, he should be able to move out of the way just enough so that the attack misses him by the thickness of a sheet of paper, thus enabling him to counterattack immediately.

Moro Ashi Dachi - Feet shoulder width apart  and parallel with one foot  "one foot distance" ahead. Weight distribution 50/50.

Morote no Kamae - Traditional fighting position (used in kata) The front arm is vertical and the hand iis at chin level and the back arm is held horizontally with the hand covering the solar plexus.

Morote - two handed eg. morote tsuki

Musubi Dachi - training stance. heels together with toes pointed outward in a "vee".

Mokuso- meditation

No Ga Re - breathing techique

No Ga Re Omote -

Obi- belt

Okuriashi - footwork: sliding forward, back or side in fighting stance while maintaining same foot forward .

Osu - term used to mean patience, respect and appreciation.

Rei - bow

Sanchin Dachi - training stance; feet shoulder width apart, legs and feet internally rotated, knees flexed, one foot "one foot's distance" forward.

Seiken - forefist

Seiza - formal sitting position; knees bent and under the body, fists closed and placed upon the hips.

Sempai - senior

Sensei - teacher

Shihan - master

Shotei - heel of palm

Shuto - knife hand

Shita Tsuki - upper cut

Sute Waza - set up technique

Tachi/Dachi - stance

Tan Den - the physical and spiritual power center of the body. 3 fingers distance below the navel.

Tataken - sideways punch

Tettsui - hammer fist

Tobi - jump

Tsuki - thrust

Uchi - stike (also inside)

Uke - block (literal translation "to receive")

Uraken - backfist

Uraken Gammen Uchi - backfist between the eyes

Uraken Saiyu Uchi - back fist side to side.

Ushiro - back

Ushiro Geri - back kick

Yamei - stop

Yasume - final position

Yoi - ready

Yoi no Tachi - ready stance, feet parallel and shoulder width, 50/50 weight distribution.

Yoko Geri - side kick

Zanchin - Even after the movement ends the mind maintains a ready alertness. Maintain your attention on your oppenent even after the fight is complete.
