Street Smart Essentials Core Training (S.S.E.C.T.) Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How is S.S.E.C.T different from other Cardio work-outs? A: The emphasis on realistic self defense is what sets this system apart. Every move practiced has a direct application in reality based self defense.
Q: What do you mean by "realistic" self defense? A: I believe for a system of self defense to be realistic it has to work for anyone, anywhere, anytime, regardless of surroundings (i.e. subway, ATMs, crowded or dark places, in the rain, etc…), of what you are wearing (tight pants, skirt, high heels, etc…), the size or strength of your opponent(s), or what kind of weapon(s) they intend to use.
Q: What are some of the benefits I should expect from practicing S.S.E.C.T? A: The system has been created with 2 things in mind: help people get in the best possible shape while teaching them self defense. The workout is designed to: - tone/sculpt the body - improve coordination, balance, stamina, focus and overall self-confidence - release stress and help people feel energized and more alert. - give anyone the "tools" to defend themselves against stronger opponents
Q: Can every one do it? A: Yes! Because it is not based on strength, flexibility, age, gender or size. However, because of the "realistic nature" of some of the techniques, students must be at least 18years old.
Q: Is it safe? A: We train with proper protective gear which includes groin cup (yes, women too!), hand guards and sometimes head gear and shin guards and we recommend that you check with your physician before beginning any rigorous training program.
Q: Is it hard? A: It is challenging and that’s why students love it. They get in better shape while learning special skills. Students progress at their own pace in a FUN and FRIENDLY environment. This is NOT A MACHO BOOT CAMP!
Q: Why the use of music? A: Repetition creates "muscle memory". Keeping up with a beat helps develop speed and stamina (plus it's more fun!).
Q: What if I am overweight or out of shape? A: Not a problem! The class is structured to allow you to work at your own pace while still challenging you to get better. If you want to lose weight, we will help you!
Q: How long does it take to learn the techniques? A: The techniques are meant to be simple so they can be learned quickly, however, the more you practice, , the more confident and skillful you become with the techniques. Also, because it is not anchored in ancient tradition, the system is constantly updated. Some moves are removed and replaced by better ones and as new information becomes available it is incorporated.
