Instructor Highlight

Master Yu-Tai Chi   
Born in Shanghai in 1929, Master Yu Cheng-hsiang studied Shaolin at age 15 to control asthma. In 1949, he moved to Taiwan, where he studied Yang-style tai chi with Cheng Man-ching. Ten years later, Master Yu was teaching teachers. He came to New York in 1979 where he continues to teach. Prominent students have included Maggie Newman and Joseph Zeisky.

Boxing most likely was invented in various cultures independently and had their origins in prehistorical periods. Archaeological evidence suggests boxing existed in Africa as early as 4000 BCwith the earliest visual evidence for boxing appearing in Sumerian relief carvings from the 3rd millennium BC. The earliest evidence for it in the Mediterranean was around 1500 BC.

Experiential Anatomy and Movement Observation Workshops* - taught by Michelle Gay -CMA, RSME/T, ACE, sensei,

Sundays  10:00am - 1:00pm.

In these workshops, participants will be introduced to a bias-free movement language, gain insight into their own movement patterns and preferences, increase and sharpen their observational skills, and develop alternative strategies for coaching and teaching. They will investigate and analyze the fundamental anatomical principles and movement dynamics underlying their respective movement arts and fitness specialties.

Past Events

This workshop,  taught by Maria Van Dessel ,a  high ranking jujitsu and karate instructor, and Michelle Gay, a karate instructor and Laban Movement Analyst, combines the principles outlined in Gavin De Becker's - The Gift of Fear:  Survival Signals That Protect Us From Violence ,  Laban Movement Analysis, and traditional sefl defense techniques. It is presented as a  combination of video and discussion,   movement based experientials, and practical release and run self-defense techniques.
